Details Magazine - Interview - 12/08 [18 Nov 2008|09:37am]
If you ask him what makes him appear Hollywood, it's an unusual answer that seems to shock people who are just getting to know Supernatural's Matt Owings. "I stopped living in an apartment, and now I live in a house. It's not some big mansion, but it's a house," jokes the Texan, coming from a town he calls "small enough to know everyone, but big enough to have a Wal-Mart." The 29-year old Owings first appeared in the critical and commercial flop O, but after notable roles in Lords of Dogtown and the teen hit John Tucker Must Die, television's Dean Winchester is ready to take his career to the next level. After scoring a minor part in Watchmen, Owings will be taking on the iconic Jason Voorhees in another Holden Kennison project, the remake of Friday the 13th. Amidst all the mayhem, Owings found time to answer a few questions about cars, careers, swords, and crazy fans.

Fans of your show Supernatural are gaining a reputation for being a little off-kilter. What's the strangest thing to ever happen in a fan encounter?
laughs My fans have a tendency to plan so far ahead for me, they know what direction they want the show to go in, and even my career. I think they were a little disappointed my role in Watchmen isn't that big, and honestly, I'm glad. You're working with a heavyweight cast and a heavyweight director in the situation, and it was a real learning experience. Everyone was really nice though, and I had a blast. That's totally a tangent though, so I think it's probably safe to say that the strangest thing was being asked if I'd ever consider donating sperm.

That is really crazy. What was your response?
I said that I'm not prepared for a tinier version of myself roaming the world yet!

Kind of smack dab in the middle of all your teenage movie roles came a turn in Dead Silence. Do you think that was a bold move for your career?
I didn't even think twice about it. The only thing I really think about is knowing that I can't do teen stuff forever. I'm pretty much so far removed from my teens that I've almost forgotten the stuff in high school they told you was so important, like geometry. Really, I just kind of think that sometimes, you have to take some time and enjoy this. I'm loving my career, it's something not everyone gets to do, you know? Even if I did Dead Silence, it wasn't because it wasn't "teen", it was because I loved the script. Catch me in something different soon, and maybe you'll see if I'm trying to avoid that label. I think once I get to that point, it's the kiss of death, and I'll be ready to do movies of the week after that.

Are you as obsessive over your car as Dean Winchester is over his Impala?
Nope, never. Never, ever. I drive a very pedestrian, hardly noticable car. I blend in well, and I like it like that. Not every guy is totally into muscle cars and things like that. My dad thinks it's fantastic, and I've been trying to beg the producers to let my dad have it as soon as we finish the series. Cars are that thing my brother and father are into, I was always kind of into samurai swords and everything.

Do you have a collection?
It's doubled in the past couple of years. I have all these great swords and weapons, and I actually think it's the most Hollywood thing in my home. I live by myself up here in Vancouver, so if you ever come visit, I have a whole room that's wall to wall replica swords from movies and just in general. It's like a small armory in there. I'm actually kind of hoping someone can get me hooked up with a replica sword from the Kill Bill series, because I fell in love with it.

Maybe Holden Kennison can get you hooked up.
I already begged. I told him I'd take the minimum pay if he could, because those swords were incredible.

What's it like working with him, especially on a project that he's so obsessive over like Friday the 13th?
Everyone seems to think that he's off-kilter and absolutely insane, but that's not the case. He just overly pays attention to detail and wants things to be perfect. You have these people who are totally in love with the projects they work on, and that's the case here. He loves what he's doing, and he wants to make it incredibly worth it. Maybe people confuse his insanity for passion, but he got the best performances out of everyone involved, and he made it that much more fun to work with.

Do you picture yourself as passionate about projects or is it a little less than that?
I think that everyone is passionate, because if you're not, you're in the wrong line of work. I love this job, I love everything about it. It's kind of hard to believe, but I wasn't exactly popular growing up, but you find these people you work with, and you connect. If you're not passionate when you start, everyone else's passion becomes infectious, and you wind up becoming just as. Honestly, if you're not passionate about anything, you're not really living life, and I don't want to be that guy.
